Summer Enrichment Workshops 2011
Reading, Math and Language courses will include opportunities for remedial work, as well as enrichment, individually tailored to meet the needs of each child. Any grade levels listed below are for students entering those grades in September. All classes (except Academic Chess) are Monday through Friday for 5 weeks, June 27 through July 29. See schedule of classes for the times. Students will not be required to wear their uniform.
Academic Courses
Reading Grades 1 - 6
Strengthen phonics, word attack skills, and sight vocabulary to develop oral reading fluency. Strategies to develop comprehension skills include making predictions, distinguishing fact and fiction, and drawing conclusions. Listening centers reinforce listening techniques and reading fluency.Language Arts Grades 1 – 6
Enhance creative writing using story starters and mad libs. Grammar, punctuation, and capitalization rules will be reviewed to develop proper sentence structure and paragraph writing. Craft your own story or poem and publish it using Microsoft Word in our computer lab.Math Grades 1 – 6
Improve basic math proficiency through hands-on activities. Explore math concepts of sequence, place value, and fractions using manipulatives. Become a math master through enrichment activities, which strengthen problem solving and math reasoning using everyday life situations.Pre-Algebra/Algebra Grades 7 – 8
Strengthen math skills and prepare for algebra by reviewing essential math operations using decimals, percentages, fractions, and positive and negative numbers. Challenge yourself with advanced work in algebraic concepts, such as relations and functions, graphing on the coordinate plane and solving systems of equations and inequalities.Head Start on the HSPT (High School Placement Test) 2 hours daily Grades 7 - 8
Receive advanced preparation for the HSPT given by most private high schools as part of their admissions process. The tuition includes the HSPT Handbook of practice tests. These daily two-hour sessions will incorporates: Reading comprehension - finding main idea, drawing conclusions, making predictions, separating fact from fiction, and reasoning skills. Grammar usage and writing skills - proper usage of various parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, and practice writing test essays. Mathematical skills - operations with fractions, decimals, percents, and mixed numbers; principles involved in algebra, geometry, probability, sequences and measurement. Test taking skills - a variety of strategies to maximize test scores.
Mysteries of Science Grades 1 - 2
Plant seeds and watch them grow under various conditions. Discover the magic of magnets, why it rains, why plant leaves reach for the sky and roots dig deep in the ground. Scientific secrets will be revealed, such as how day becomes night and where does the sun go when it sets. Witness the metamorphosis of a butterfly. A hands-on lab approach is used to discover the mysteries of our natural world.Science Explorers Grades 3 - 4
Build a roller coaster to explore motion, gravity, and energy. Discover how simple machines work and how movement can be harnessed to work for us. Study rocks and minerals, while you grow your own crystals. A hands-on lab approach is used to study the forces of nature.
Science Detectives Grades 5 - 6
Solve scientific puzzles by learning how to ask the right questions. Be a detective and take a journey to the center of the Earth. Search for clues to discover the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes. Uncover the inner workings of mammals. An inquiry-based approach is used to develop the skills needed to appreciate the scientific method.Science Inventors Grades 7 - 8
Invent and build your own land racer and prepare it for competition. Construct your own bridge and see how much weight it can hold. Investigate motion, velocity, the life sciences, as well as, a bit of chemistry as you create your own hypotheses and test it yourself. An inquiry-based approach is used to develop the skills needed to appreciate the scientific method.Computer Research and Presentation Skills Grades 4 – 8
Research and presentation skills will be developed through projects requiring the use of the internet in conjunction with Microsoft Word and Power Point. Laptop computers are used to emphasize writing skills as students are introduced to the basics of word processing. Verbal communication skills are developed through Power Point presentations given orally.Kindergarten
Half-Day Program
Summer group activities, including water play and cooking are offered along with a program that strengthens reading readiness through letter recognition and phonetic skills. Students will explore math concepts through hands-on activities to develop counting skills, measuring, and shapes. Group activities and play offer children an opportunity to develop a sense of self within a community by learning to cooperate and respect others. Educational objectives are achieved through crafts, music, and classroom learning centers, such as art easel, rice table play, and the building zone.
Art & Music
Drawing Development Grades 3 - 4
Students will develop their drawing skills by practicing blind contour line drawing methods. They will learn color mixing and will create different effects using paint, printing, and collage. Students will create projects from around the world, including masks from Mexico and fish prints from Japan. You will be amazed at what your child will create!Materials Fee: $10.00
Drawing and Painting Grades 5 - 8
Students will experience a more intensive study of drawing and painting through the development of drawing shapes and blind contour line drawing techniques. They will arrange compositions, practice shading techniques, and use a variety of media, such as charcoal, colored pencils, pastels and gouache paints. Students will paint outdoors as Monet did, compose a still life arrangement with real objects like Cezanne, and create a cubist sculpture in the style of Picasso.Materials Fee: $15.00
Artistic Expression Grades 4 - 8
Students will develop their artistic expression by experimenting with a variety of techniques using watercolor salt methods, polymer clay, paper mache, acrylics and pastels. They will try plein air drawing outdoors, cartooning, building 3-D form with wood, paper making, and creating other usable art projects. Contemporary and Modern Art will be highlighted throughout this course as they express themselves through drawing, painting, and sculpting. Materials Fee: $15.00Half-Day Programs - $550 for 5 Weeks

Daycare Available - $ 150 for 5 weeks
Daycare is available until 4:00 p.m. Children will have lunch from 12:30 – 1:00. The daycare charge will begin at 1:00. Students must be picked up by 4:00. A late fee of $12.00 per child will be charged for each ½ hour or any portion thereof, after 4:00 p.m. The daycare charge for students enrolled in afternoon classes will begin at the end of their last class.
